Burn Off The Turkey 5K in Gorham – Greg in under 20!

We’re up in Maine for Thanksgiving, and Greg ran the Burn off the Turkey 5k in Gorham for the third year in a row. His 5k times have been dropping towards the 20 minute mark, and I decided I would rather see him run (especially since he might break 20 minutes) than race myself.

It’s really fun that we both run the same races a lot and get to talk about the course, but not fun that I never see him finish because he’s faster than me!

This was the first time I’d gotten to see him run since the Boston Marathon in April. I loved it – it was fun hurrying with the kids to see him near the library, watching Will yell “GO Dad, Go DAD!!!” and seeing him fly by in 10 degree weather wearing shorts because he was running so hard.

There was a moment watching him run towards the finish, just FLYING, when I couldn’t believe I was actually married to THAT guy. It was the coolest I’ve felt in months. [Insert Maine weather joke here.]

Greg crossed in under 20 (19:47) and came in first in his age category and 10th overall. And everyone around me knew he was my husband because I was screaming at him. SCORE.

I also got to see the cutest finisher cross – my niece who had ridden in her stroller while my sister-in-law walked with her father and sister. She was adorable running towards the finish with them 🙂

I love 5ks that welcome walkers. This one even had a walking division – it’s a great and legitimate way to get out in every season and exercise!

I went for my own run yesterday, and it felt so good to be outside and warm in the winter sunshine. It is colder than it’s been all season, and running outside was the first time in days that my whole body had felt hot! Reminds me of the importance of getting outside and moving.

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are finding great ways to burn off the pie 🙂
