My first two runs post half-marathon!

Now that my half marathon is behind me,
I’m rotating in my new Nike Free 3.0’s!
I don’t really notice them.
That’s what I’m looking for in a running shoe, so that’s perfect 🙂
Finally went for my first few runs after my half marathon last weekend!  Our schedule had been busy after we returned, and I caught a cold from the kids that had my lying awake at 4 a.m. convinced I had a sinus infection.  (I think I’m in the clear, though…)

Friday afternoon, I finally felt well enough to go out for a run.  I planned on just 3 or 4 miles, to ease back into running after my half marathon.  It felt great.

One of my challenges with the taper weeks before the half marathon was that I was used to running so many more miles than I was that I felt like I’d quit running.  It doesn’t feel very reassuring to quit practicing right before the biggest race of your life.

The half marathon was great, and a lot of running, and left me feeling stiff for a few days, and with no urge to run.  By Tuesday or Wednesday, though, my urge to run was back but my body was too fatigued from my cold for me to feel comfortable, or even have time, getting out for a run.

I was so tired and sneezing so much on Thursday that I cancelled dinner plans with a friend… and I had REALLY been looking forward to going out to dinner… by myself… without the boys, to hang out, have a glass of wine, and talk uninterrupted about more than child rearing.

When I felt better Friday afternoon, it was such a relief to get out for a short run.  I felt like I had quit running before the race, and then felt like I had quit afterwards.  I know I’ve been running for over a year now, but I still feel like if I take more than four days off, that I may never start again!  I think this is just a crazy fear, since I’m clearly pretty into this whole running thing, but it’s a fear nonetheless.

I’m happy to report that I went for a run on Friday, and on Sunday, and… whew… I show no signs of quitting 😉

My first run after my half marathon!

Sunday morning run in the rain 🙂

  1. I started c25k running outside. This past week and the last week of c25k will be on the treadmill. I have my first 5k on October 6. Should I be concerned about the difference. It seems I run slower on the treadmill but I have had two fantastic runs in a row!! Thoughts on treadmills running?

    1. I think the difference, especially as a beginner, is minimal. I found that when I ran more on it in the fall and winter, it helped in some ways because it was more of a hassle to slow down or take a walking break. I kept steady, just by virtue of keeping up with the treadmill. A downside was that I wasn’t running hills, because I never was motivated enough to change that elevation setting on the treadmill.

I think if you’re running slower on it but having fantastic runs right in a row, it may mean that when you run outside, you’re having trouble pacing yourself and running slow enough to continue running the entire time you set your goal to run for! So maybe running on the treadmill is a great thing, because it’s helping you pace yourself and therefore complete your workouts.

    2. Kinda what I was thinking but wanted to be sure I wasn’t unknowingly sabotaging myself. My last week of C25k this week! and my first 5k to actually run Oct. 6 – 2 days after my 48 birthday. I’ll be ahead of my goal to run a 5k before my 50th.

  2. I feel the exact same way when I take a day off of running for whatever reason. Like, all of a sudden, I’m a poser who calls herself a “runner”. When in actuality, my body maybe just needs the break, and missing one day isn’t going to really affect my endurance after weeks and weeks and weeks of running. This is what I tell myself anyway! Runners guilt is almost as bad as mommy guilt sometimes!

I ran 12.5 miles on Saturday, and skipped my short run this morning because I just wasn’t feeling up to it. No specific reason, my head just wasn’t in the game. But it will be ok. My body hasn’t forgotten how to run.
